480 GRAVEL PIT

The 480 Pit is located just south of Marquette on Co Rd 480 approximately 1 ½ miles west from the cross roads with Co Rd 553. It is the home of the only commercially active deposit of Kona Dolomite in North America. Kona Dolomite is know for its beauty when cut and polished and is sought after by rock-hounds for jewelry and other decorative purposes. In the late 1980's, A. Lindberg & Sons donated a 2ft by 3ft by 5ft purple/pink Kona Dolomite rock (weighing over 3 1/3 tons) to be included in the construction of the "Foundation of Freedom Monument" for the United States Constitution Bicentennial. This rock, representing the State of Michigan, is incorporated into a memorial monument built near Independence Hall in Philadelphia as a tribute to the US Constitution.
